Black 4X wool felt, shipped unshaped with a 4 1/4" brim and a 5" crown. Silk lined, interchangeable felt band. An open crown is a blank — cattleman, gus, teardrop, whatever you want steamed into it.

What the X actually means.

Felt gets graded in X's, and the number is supposed to tell you how fine it is — how much fur is in the blend against the wool. The catch is that nobody regulates it. One maker's 10X is another maker's 4X, and the number stamped on a sweatband is worth about as much as the person who stamped it.

So here's ours, plain. The 4X is wool felt — it holds a shape, it takes weather, and it's priced so a good hat isn't a special occasion. The 10X grizzly is denser and finer, brushed to a long nap so the surface carries texture instead of sitting flat. You'll feel the difference the first time you pick one up.
