Clover weave, 30X straw.

A four-leaf vent pattern worked through the crown — more open than a tight weave, cooler to wear, and it reads as detail rather than as a hole. Shipped open crown with a 4 1/4" brim and a 5" crown, ready to shape.

The Story

A straw hat has to survive a Texas summer.

Higher bar than it sounds. The whole point of straw is airflow — a vented weave moves heat off your head, and that is the entire reason to own one between May and October. The trade is structure. The more you open up the weave, the less the hat wants to hold its line.

Every pattern we carry is a different answer to that trade. Tighter weaves keep a crisper shape. Opener ones breathe harder. Neither one is the right answer — the right one is the one you'll actually reach for.

Woven and finished in León, Guanajuato.

Craft & Materials

The Straw

Woven straw with a vented pattern through the crown. The vents are the point — they move air, which is what separates a straw hat you wear all summer from one you take off by noon.

The Shape

Ships open crown — unshaped, 4 1/4" brim, 5" crown. Straw takes a shape with steam the same as felt does.

The Details

Interchangeable ribbon.

Shaping

We shape in house. Tell us what you want and our hat shaper will walk you through it — howdy@shopthirdcoast.com.

The Hands

Fit

Measure around your head just above the ears and check the size guide. Between sizes, go up.

Product Care

Handling

  • Pick it up by the brim, front and back. Straw creases where you grab it
  • Set it down crown-down, resting on the crown — never on the brim

Moisture

  • Straw and water don't get along. A wet straw hat loses its shape and often doesn't get it back
  • If it does get wet, set it crown-down and let it dry slowly at room temperature
  • Never use direct heat

Cleaning

  • Dust with a soft brush, following the weave
  • Wipe the sweatband with a barely damp cloth after hot days — that's where a straw hat actually wears out
  • No solvents, no cleaners

Storage

  • Crown-down or on a hat stand, out of the sun
  • Don't leave it on a dashboard or in a hot car — dry heat makes straw brittle and it snaps instead of bending
  • Box it for the winter

Straw is a season hat. Treated right, it'll give you several of them.
