10X grizzly felt in silverbelly.

Grizzly is a long-nap finish — the fibers are brushed out rather than pressed flat, so the felt carries texture and catches light instead of sitting dead. 10X is a denser, finer felt than the 4X, and you can feel the difference in the hand. Shipped open crown, ready to shape.

What the X actually means.

Felt gets graded in X's, and the number is supposed to tell you how fine it is — how much fur is in the blend against the wool. The catch is that nobody regulates it. One maker's 10X is another maker's 4X, and the number stamped on a sweatband is worth about as much as the person who stamped it.

So here's ours, plain. The 4X is wool felt — it holds a shape, it takes weather, and it's priced so a good hat isn't a special occasion. The 10X grizzly is denser and finer, brushed to a long nap so the surface carries texture instead of sitting flat. You'll feel the difference the first time you pick one up.

A note on the nap

Long-nap felt shows brush direction. That's the finish working, not a flaw — brush it all one way and it evens out.

Handling

Pick it up by the brim, front and back. Grabbing the crown is what puts a permanent dent where you don't want one
