What the X actually means.

Felt gets graded in X's, and the number is supposed to tell you how fine it is — how much fur is in the blend against the wool. The catch is that nobody regulates it. One maker's 10X is another maker's 4X, and the number stamped on a sweatband is worth about as much as the person who stamped it.

So here's ours, plain. The 4X is wool felt — it holds a shape, it takes weather, and it's priced so a good hat isn't a special occasion. The 10X grizzly is denser and finer, brushed to a long nap so the surface carries texture instead of sitting flat. You'll feel the difference the first time you pick one up.

Fit

Measure around your head just above the ears and check the size guide. Between sizes, go up — a hat that runs a hair loose can be padded, one that's tight can't be fixed.
