Genuine caiman hornback over a leather sole — square toe, 1.5" stacked heel, plush leather lining. Hornback is the dorsal cut, which means you get the raised bony ridges running the center of the boot instead of the flat tile you'd get off the belly. It reads rough on purpose.

Handcrafted in León, Guanajuato.

  • Genuine caiman hornback — not printed, not embossed
  • Plush leather lining
  • 1.5" Stacked leather heel
  • Double-stitched welt
  • Square toe
  • Orders ship in 1–2 days

Fit: our men's boots run one size big. Order one size down from your usual.

The Story

The hard one to build.

Caiman carries bone in the skin — actual mineral deposits under the scale, which is what makes it stiffer than gator and why it costs less. Most tanneries would rather work something softer.

Hornback makes it harder still. You're cutting through the ridge line, and the bootmaker has to set that spine dead center on the vamp and keep it centered as the leather curves over the toe. Off by a quarter inch and the whole boot looks crooked. There's no fixing it after the fact.

That's the reason we carry it. A hornback that's cut right is a piece of evidence — it tells you somebody in León knew exactly what they were doing before the leather ever went on the last.

Handmade in León, Guanajuato.

Craft & Materials

The Skin
Genuine Caiman. Not printed, not embossed — the actual skin, tanned and cut by hand. Scale pattern, size, and color vary from pair to pair because no two animals are identical.

The Sole
Leather sole with a leather stacked heel and durable rubber cap. 1.5" heel.

The Build
Double-stitched welt. Square toe. Full leather lining. Built to be resoled.

The Hands
Cut, lasted, and finished in León, Guanajuato. Exotic skins take a bootmaker longer — the scale pattern has to be matched across the vamp and up the shaft, and there's no second chance on a hide this expensive.

Fit
Our men's boots run one size big. Order one size down from your usual.

Product Care

Moisture

  • Keep them dry. Exotic skin stains and stiffens when soaked
  • If wet, blot immediately and air dry at room temperature, away from heat
  • Never use direct heat

The Skin

  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing
  • Use a conditioner formulated for exotic skins, sparingly, a few times a year
  • Never use standard shoe polish or saddle soap — it fills the scale seams and dulls the finish
  • Do not scrub against the scale direction; you can lift a scale and it won't lie back down

Storage

  • Boot trees, always — creasing across scale is permanent
  • Store upright, out of direct sunlight; exotic skin fades faster than cowhide
  • Let them rest a day between wears

A pair of exotics is a lifetime boot if you treat it like one.
